Beat the heat and save money doing it!

With rising utility costs, finding smart ways to save money while keeping your apartment comfortable is crucial. Plus, being mindful of your energy use can reduce your carbon footprint. It only takes a few small adjustments in your day-to-day to start saving cash and energy this summer.

Optimize Air Conditioning Usage:
Have you heard of the 20-degree rule? Set your thermostat no more than 20 degrees lower than the temperature outside. This will help you strike a balance between comfort and energy efficiency, and keep you from blasting unnecessarily cooler temps during the hottest hours of the day.

Block Daytime Sunlight:
Sunshine is great! That is, until it bakes your apartment in the middle of the day (💸). Use blinds, shades, or drapery to block harsh sunlight through the hottest parts of the day. Remember, dark colors absorb heat (trapping heat in your home). Opt for lighter colors to repel it.

Ceiling Fan Efficiency:
Ceiling fans cool people, not rooms. Remember to turn yours off when you leave the room. Don't forget to make sure your fan is rotating counter-clockwise in the summer, which will keep the air circulating and enhance its cooling effect.

Power Down Electronics:
Make it a habit to turn off electronics like computers, game consoles, televisions, and other devices when they're not in use. Even in standby mode, these electronics can draw electricity and drive up energy costs.

Reduce Hot Water Usage:
Using cooler water not only saves money but also benefits your skin! Consider taking shorter showers, use cold water for laundry when possible, and call for maintenance to fix any water leaks. Small adjustments like these can add up to significant savings over time.

Use the Dishwasher Wisely:
If your apartment is equipped with a dishwasher, enjoy it! But, turn off the heat-dry option in the summer. Its energy use is twofold: it creates heat to dry the dishes, then your AC has to compensate for the additional heat in your kitchen. Instead, let your dishes air dry by opening the dishwasher door once the washing cycle is complete.

Keeping your apartment clean and clutter-free can have a positive impact on the efficiency of your home. Make sure air vents and registers are clear of obstructions and cool air can circulate easily.
