During a recent home inspection, I used thermal imaging to compare roof temperatures in direct sunlight versus areas shaded by a mature tree.
The difference was dramatic.
The shaded portion of the roof measured approximately 76°F, while the sun-exposed portion measured approximately 140°F at the same time.
That’s a temperature difference of nearly 65°F on the same roof.
Thermal imaging doesn’t just help identify defects. It can also help homeowners better understand how sunlight, shade, landscaping, and building materials affect a home’s performance.
