The deadline to apply for the Montana Tax Relief for Homesteads & Long-Term Rentals has been extended to March 20, 2026.

If you haven’t submitted your application yet, now’s the time. This program could provide meaningful property tax relief for qualifying long-term rental properties.

Property Tax Relief for Homeowners

Reduced Property Tax Rate on Principal Residence/Long-term Rental property.
• March 20 is the deadline to apply for the Principal Residence (Homestead) classification. This classification is available to individuals, including purchasers under a contract for deed, grantors of trust indentures, and trustees of grantor revocable trusts.
• March 20 is the deadline to apply for Long-Term Rental classification. This classification is available to entities and individuals who own qualifying rental property, including purchasers under a contract for deed, grantors of trust indentures, trustees of grantor revocable trusts, and businesses that provide employee housing as part of an employee’s compensation.
• Qualifying properties receive a reduced property tax rate that follows a tiered structure:
o 0.76% on the first $378,000 of market value
o 0.90% on the portion between $378,001 and $756,000
o 1.10% on the portion between $756,001 and $1,511,999
o 1.90% on any portion over $1,512,000 or greater
