10 months into my golf journey and I can say this has been one of the most enjoyable, frustrating, exhilarating, annoying, therapeutic, peaceful, chaotic, challenging, and fulfilling things I’ve ever done.
A few lessons I’ve learned that have applied across my entire life.
1. It’s always you vs you. There’s no defense, just you, your skills, your prep and how you approach the course. Play your own game.
2. Don’t dwell on the last shot. As in life you’ll take bad shots, make a mistake or miscalculate. The faster you can shake it off and prepare for the next shot the better your results will be overall.
3. You can cheat the reps. No matter how good you are the more reps you get the better your skills, instincts and habits are. When you step away from the reps it usually shows.
4. Consistency is more important than one great moment. Having a consistent shot that you can rely on will get you further than trying to win it all in one hole or round.
5. Flexibility is key. Stretching and training in a way to make by body comfortable making the movements necessary to swing a golf club have been more important than any amount of practicing I could do. Being mentally flexible is sometimes the biggest barrier to success. Being open to letting go of what framework has worked for you in the past opens doors to a future you could never anticipate.
6. Enjoy the day. Sometimes the win is just in being around great people, having great conversation, and enjoying nature. When chasing something difficult the process is always more enjoyable and a little bit easier when you’re around great people.
7. Have fun. As difficult as learning golf is and has been it’s also been one of the most fun experiences I’ve ever had. It’s reminded me that hard things can still be fun and to embrace the process of who you’ll become in pursuit of that difficult thing. It’s helped me grow tremendously in all areas of my life.
Just a couple things I’ve learned on my journey. I look forward to see what 2026 brings, who I’ll get to meet, new courses I’ll play and what new worlds I’ll be introduced to as a result of this game.
