I went to the DMV to tag my car, thinking it would be a quick stop.

I grabbed my number, sat down, nothing out of the ordinary. Just another errand.

Then I looked up at the board.

My number was not even close. Not a small wait, not a few people ahead. It was nowhere near being called.

At first, I figured it would move faster than it looked. That’s what you tell yourself.

It didn’t.

After a while, the whole room felt the same. Everyone just sitting there, checking the screen every so often. A few people clearly came prepared. Phone chargers, snacks, like they already knew how this was going to go.

Time kept passing.

At some point, I realized I had been there long enough to leave, go handle something else, and still come back without missing my turn.

But by then, I stayed. You wait that long, you’re not starting over.

Eventually, they called my number.

I got up, walked to the counter, ready to finally get it done.

And standing there, it hit me.

All of that time, all that waiting, came down to one thing.

I could have just done it online when I had the chance.
