Congratulations to this year's winners of the Cleveland 2030 District / USGBC - Northeast Ohio's "Green Building Challenge" Competition, including Bendix's new Headquarters! Environmentally responsible design and construction is being awarded and celebrated in our community!

The Bendix headquarters in Avon, Ohio, has been awarded the title of overall winner in the Cleveland 2030 District's Green Building Challenge.

It's official! As of today, architects, engineers, landscape architects, and surveyors have lien rights in Ohio!

A very major piece of legislation was signed today by the Ohio Governor, giving professional lien rights to all Ohio architects, landscape architects, engineers, and surveyors (SB49)! No longer is Ohio the only U. S. state that does not have lien rights for Architects and Engineers. It was a privilege to be present for this ceremony, to witness the signing, and to meet the Governor. Thank you to the bill’s bipartisan major sponsors – Senator Hottinger and Senator Sykes as well as its co-sponsors Senators Thomas, Craig, Rulli, Yuko, and Blessing! Thank you to our bill partners – ACEC, OSLA, and PLSO. Thank you to our AIA Ohio lobbyist Luther Liggett for his diligent work on this legislation. Thank you to AIA Ohio Executive Vice President and Executive Director Kate Metzger Brunswick, CAE, Hon, AIA for her ongoing support. Thank you to Robert Maschke FAIA who believed in the original pitch and, with the 2017 AIA Ohio Board, authorized the AIA Ohio Lien-Rights / Payment-Assurance Taskforce to work on this legislation. Thank you to the AIA Ohio presidents since – John Weigand AIA, John Kelleher AIA, Mary Glowacki AIA, and Karen Planet AIA – who continued to support this Taskforce over four and a half years. Thank you to those on the Taskforce that contributed to this success today, especially co-chair Terry Welker FAIA, Bruce Sekanick FAIA, and Jack Bialosky Jr. FAIA!

Today we celebrate the distinguished life and exquisite work of local architect Richard Fleischman, FAIA, who sadly passed away last Saturday.

Richard was a brilliant thinker, leading modern designer, and motivator of talent. He led one of Cleveland’s most respected design firms with local, state, and national award-winning projects spanning at least five decades.

I loved my time working with Richard as a young designer, project architect, and junior partner. We crafted modern homes on the lake in Bratenahl as well as churches and prestigious civic buildings across northern Ohio. Richard’s mentorship greatly impacted my sensibilities as a designer and he continues to influence our work at Christopher @ Architects LLC. In more recent years, I enjoyed seeing him at church and keeping in touch with him.

I borrow a couple of images from his website to share here so that we can all celebrate Richard. Rest in peace, Richard. We will miss you.
