In October of 1897, William Hammerschmidt, representing the Lombard Brick and Tile Company, proposed installing a brick crosswalk on the south side of Lake Street, St. Charles Road today, at the foot of Park Avenue.

The proposal was approved, with one condition: the $10 payment would be made once the crosswalk proved to be durable and satisfactory!
