β Coffee with Beth: This is what I'll be working on over the next few weeks.
January may seem like a long way off, but 1099 season doesn't start in January. At least it shouldn't. π
This time of year, we start reviewing our clients' vendor lists and looking for anyone who may need a 1099 but doesn't have a completed Form W-9 on file.
Why now?
Because January is a terrible time to discover that you need a contractor's legal name, business name, address, tax classification and taxpayer identification number... and you can't get them to return your calls. π
Our preference is always to collect a completed W-9 before a contractor is paid for the first time. But when that doesn't happen, now is the time to start filling in the gaps.
So over the next few weeks, some of our clients will be getting lists from us saying, essentially, βWe're missing W-9s for these vendors. Let's get them now.β
Future-you will be very grateful when January rolls around. βπ
Bookkeeper tip: If you work with contractors, make collecting a W-9 part of your onboarding process. Don't wait until you need to prepare the 1099.
