(December 28th,1968)

On this day in 1968, The Temptations’ song
“Cloud Nine” peaked at #2 on the Billboard
R&B chart.

Since June 1968,David Ruffin was out,and
Dennis Edwards was in with founders Otis
Williams,Melvin Franklin,Eddie Kendricks,
and Paul Williams to begin the group’s third lineup.

Dennis had already recorded the collaborative
albums with The Supremes,but for the recording
of “Cloud Nine”, this was his first official recording
with just the five of them.

It was inspired by Sly & The Family Stone’s
use of multiple leads and Otis’ suggestion
of that style to their producer,Norman Whitfield.

In March 1969,it secured their first Grammy
award,making them Motown’s FIRST act to
do so!
