Supporting local businesses should be non-negotiable.

We all play a role in the success of our communities and cities. If you aren’t a business owner, your role is to support your neighbors who are.

Support can come in various forms:

1️⃣ Promote: Share about local businesses to visitors and other community members. A word-of-mouth recommendation goes a long way and is often exponential in value.

2️⃣ Purchase: If you’re able to purchase from local businesses, it’s a great way to pour some of the resources you have back into a community that provides so much to you.

3️⃣ Participate: If purchasing from local businesses isn’t in the cards for you right now, get involved with them. Ask around to see who is hiring and who needs support.

All three of these roles contribute to the future economy of your community and show your community members that supporting one another is the key to flourishing.

Hardships are the catalyst for lasting change. In Urbana, we have experienced our fair share of hardships.

But we are lucky to be seeing a rise in residents who are active participants in the community. Some are literally investing money into the town. Others are investing their time as volunteers for people in need. Still others are investing their skills and passions through bringing their own businesses to life.

Each of these investments is a piece of the puzzle that makes our city what it is. Without them, Urbana wouldn’t be progressing. But because we’re coming together to give what we can to our home base, change is on the horizon—and it’s change for the better.

Fighting for freedom in Urbana is about far more than one lawsuit.

It’s about coming together to build a community that’s stronger than ever before. Give small business owners a space where they feel truly supported for who they are and the goals they have. Show children what a high-quality education system that actually prepares them for the real world looks like. Lift up troubled youth, giving them opportunities to right their wrongs and get on track to realize their dreams.

Shopping local is just as much about building a stronger sense of community as fostering a great local economy.

In other words, people need people. And people are behind every single business. So show up for your local businesses. Spread the word if you found a new favorite coffee shop. Tell your friends about that beautiful old bookstore you discovered.

Local businesses need us to play our part in their stories.

Freedom tomorrow requires hard work today. What might this look like?

Fighting for freedom means standing up for and encouraging underrepresented community members. Fighting for freedom means identifying injustices and standing firmly against them through intentional action. Fighting for freedom means acting even when you don’t know what the perfect next step is.

Our country’s economy literally stands firm on the backs of small businesses.

But … if small businesses lack the support they need to flourish, then our economy will lose its footing.

Supporting local businesses is one of the simplest ways to make a direct impact. Every dollar spent locally recirculates—helping to fund jobs, encourage innovation, and bolster other local initiatives.

When small businesses thrive, entire communities benefit. These aren’t just places to shop—they’re places of culture, connection, and creativity.

If we want strong, local economies, we have to choose to support them. So let’s build and renovate buildings that can house more local businesses. Let’s encourage our neighbors to pursue their entrepreneurial dreams. Let’s pay attention to which community members might be a great fit as employees at certain local businesses.

You do have a role in the growth of your community, and the role you play matters.

There’s a chain reaction that happens when people and communities start being taken advantage of … And the cycle continues until someone takes action that interrupts it.

The Fight for Freedom Town Hall emphasized the difficulties that Urbana Tomorrow founder Justin Weller has encountered in his own journey to fight for the rights of children and business owners who face injustices in their daily lives. The path toward change is not linear. You have to struggle to get to the other side.

But the struggle is lessened when more people are working together for the same cause. Click here to learn how you can play a part in this story’s pending happy ending: https://www.freedomforurbana.com/take-action

Small businesses aren’t just storefronts—they’re the heartbeat of a community. They reflect the dreams, risks, and resilience of real people who believe in building something that lasts.

There are more than 250 small businesses in Urbana, of which about 30 are women- or minority-owned, according to the Census Bureau in 2022. We should keep finding ways to lift up and put all small businesses first whenever possible.

Whether it’s shopping local, leaving a positive review, or spreading the word, every action you take counts.
