With deep sorrow, the Urbandale Fire Department shares the news of the passing of former EMS Service Director Rob Light.
Chief Light began his service with our department as a volunteer in November 1987 and continued to serve with distinction until his retirement last year. Initially certified as a paramedic, Rob was appointed EMS Chief in 1992, a role in which he played a pivotal part in elevating our department to Paramedic-level service at a time when such capability was rare among peer agencies.
One of Rob’s proudest accomplishments was the creation of an Advanced Life Support (ALS) quick response vehicle program, developed during our volunteer era. His innovative approach and commitment to advancing emergency care left a lasting mark not only on our department but on the broader EMS community.
Rob was also among the first in Iowa to earn federal EMT-Tactical certification, enabling him to support regional tactical operations. He further served as a reserve officer with both the Urbandale Police Department and the Polk County Sheriff's Office, exemplifying his deep commitment to public service across multiple disciplines.
In recognition of his exceptional career and contributions to EMS, Rob was inducted into the Iowa EMS Association Hall of Fame in 2024.
In addition to his work in emergency services, Rob was a long-time and valued employee of the Urbandale Water Utility. Since 1983, he held various roles as a dedicated water professional, most recently serving as a construction inspector. In this role, he applied his extensive knowledge of Urbandale’s water distribution system and forged lasting partnerships with contractors. Rob was also an active member of the Iowa Section of the American Water Works Association, where he competed and won the ‘Top-Ops’ completion in years past.
Outside of his professional life, Rob found joy in shooting sports, college football, and motorcycles, and he was an enthusiastic camper. He will forever be true to his favorite team, the Alabama Crimson Tide.
Rob will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to know and work alongside him. Memorial and funeral arrangements are pending.
