🏡 HOA vs. No HOA: It’s About More Than the House

Yesterday, we were teaching our kids how to change the oil in our car. It wasn’t the fastest oil change we’ve ever done, but it was one of the most rewarding. It also sparked a conversation about something many home buyers don’t think about until after they’ve moved in.

Did you know that in some HOA communities, working on your vehicle in the driveway may not be allowed?

Now, before anyone jumps to conclusions, not all HOAs are the same. Many offer wonderful benefits like well-maintained common areas, community amenities, and standards that help protect property values. For many homeowners, that’s exactly what they’re looking for.

But every HOA has its own CC&Rs (Covenants, Conditions & Restrictions). Those rules can affect everything from parking an RV or trailer to making exterior changes to your home, and yes, even projects in your driveway.

That’s why I always encourage buyers to think beyond the home itself. Consider the lifestyle you want today and five or ten years from now. Do the HOA rules support that vision?

Buying a home isn’t just about finding the right floor plan. It’s about finding the right community for the life you want to live.
