The soldiers who returned to the Colorado mountains and shaped much of the ski and outdoor industry into what we know it is today.
The 81st anniversary of when the soldiers from the famed 10th Mountain Division — the winter warfare unit in the U.S. Army that trained south of Vail at Camp Hale — fought pivotal battles in the Apennine Mountains in Italy and surprised the N**i forces with a night attack on Feb. 18-19, 1945. The soldiers of the 10th are credited with breaking down the N**i Gothic Line after conducting a surprise attack up Riva Ridge, a cliff band with a 1,700-foot vertical pitch, in the middle of the night.
