STA awards $24.9 million construction contract for SR 37/Fairgrounds Dr. Interchange Improvements Project; Construction Anticipated to Begin March 2025

SOLANO COUNTY – Solano Transportation Authority (STA), in partnership with the City of Vallejo, California Department of Transportation, Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC), and Solano County, has awarded a contract to Bay Area contractor Ghilotti Construction Company, Inc. for the construction of the State Route (SR) 37/Fairground Drive Interchange Improvements Project. This project will implement a Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI) design at the intersection of SR 37 and Fairgrounds Drive to significantly improve traffic flow and safety while reducing congestion.

This DDI will be the first in the Bay Area and represents STA’s implementation of an innovative design to improve multimodal accessibility and safety. Beyond improving traffic flow and reducing congestion, this project will also provide continuous Class II bicycle lanes and pedestrian facilities and improve mobility access for historically disadvantaged communities by increasing connections to regional transit, employers, and the greater Vallejo Area.

This Project supports a larger countywide effort to revitalize the Solano County Fairgrounds and encourage economic growth and development, which will develop a mixed-use neighborhood with space for commercial establishments, public facilities, and multi-unit housing along with a transit mobility hub. This interchange project was awarded RM3 bridge toll funds, with Solano County as a project partner.

Construction on the State Route (SR) 37/Fairground Drive Interchange Improvements Project is anticipated to start in late March 2025, with completion by mid-2026. Pre-construction work, including tree removal, will begin in early March 2025. Landscape improvements will be made at the conclusion of construction.

I'm not here to advocate for or against this project. I'm only providing information about what's happened to date regarding the plans around it.

I do want to add that we recently had The Solano County Farm Bureau to our Board meeting and they shared some interesting facts about our agricultural sector in the County. We produce 20% of agricultural goods in the whole state.

One farmer in the region, I can't remember if it was 100 or 200 employees, but the farm pays out 1 million dollars in earned wages per month to local residents.

Each of our cities is bordered by green space. This was decided at least a couple of decades ago in order to prevent the overcrowding that cities over the bridge have experienced. I personally appreciate this aspect of our county.
