Here’s a solution to frequently having to fill the dispenser for your countertop dishwashing liquid. During this I happened to change everything, but that’s not necessary. Pull the plastic tube out from the bottom of the pump mechanism. Push in the standard tubing for water filters and refrigerator water supply. It will usually be the same size. Unscrew the present bottle from under the sink. Reset the pump into place and insert the tube into the bottle of dishwashing liquid. Make sure you leave enough length so the tube reaches the bottom of the bottle. Leave extra, you can always trim off more if needed. On this bottle the hole in the cap happened to be the exact size. If not you can always drill a small hole. It takes a dozen or more pumps to get the dishwashing liquid all the way through the tube to the pump the first time. After that it will function normally. Thanks to my son-in-law, MP3, for turning me on to this idea!

The correct way to flash a chimney to a roof is to have the top layer of flashing, counter flashing, embedded into a mortar joint, then sealed. What I see frequently is flashing wrapped around the chimney then caulked at the top. This may shed water for a while, but the caulk sealant at the top will need to be reapplied occasionally to keep the area sealed. The correct way requires far less ongoing maintenance. There’s a pretty shoddy attempt at repointing the mortar here as well.

Attic insulation can save your roof. Two neighbors roofs are pictured, both facing East. The snow covered one has adequate attic insulation to keep the heat in the home. The second has a consistent melt to the eaves where the snow remains. Heat escaping into the attic is melting the snow. The cold under the eaves is keeping snow and ice there. This can lead to ice dams and water intrusion/damage.

It’s always recommended to have an electrician check the compatibility of dissimilar breakers in your electric panel. This one, a Square D breaker in a GE panel, obviously doesn’t fit. Even a visual observation shows that the physical characteristics don’t allow it to fit within the panel opening properly. For any dissimilar breaker an electrician should check the attachment to the bus bar behind the breaker to ensure a safe and proper connection.

I’ve been running new pipe for my heating system. Several pipes embedded in the slab were leaking. For ease of use, both with the flexibility of the pipe and ease of connections, the product I decided to use was expandable PEX. I’ve heard from every HVAC contractor I know that, if properly installed, they have never seen a leak. I was curious about this connection so I cut a cross section. The seal appears amazingly tight. Using a power PEX expanding tool made the job quick and easy. I’m a fan!

The first picture shows an extension cord cut and wired directly into the electrical panel. The second is a properly installed outlet added next to the panel. Besides being an electrical violation, incredibly unsafe, not GFCI protected, and at a level any child can access, it’s also not even cost effective. If the homeowner was “smart enough” to know how to wire something into the panel then using approved materials would have been about the same price as destroying an extension cord.

Crawlspace problems! The dryer exhaust empties into the crawlspace dumping moisture there which can lead to mold and wood decay. A plastic v***r barrier was on the dirt floor, but it should be sealed to the walls. Electric and gas lines were hanging loose instead of properly secured. Insulation was missing between the above floor joists.

This is a picture of a telescoping column found in a crawlspace. This is considered a temporary support during construction only, not a permanent column. It should be replaced with a one piece steel screw jack column or a properly sized full steel column.

As of 06/2024, new smoke alarm standards were adopted (UL 217 8th edition). Important elements of this standard include the following:
Nuisance, or false, alarm reduction is built in to lessen alarms set off by cooking or steam.
Synthetic material detection is now required, such as for polyurethane foam used in furniture.
Multi-criteria detection sensors are required which will detect smoke from both slow smoldering and high flame fires.
When purchasing new smoke alarms these criteria should all be met. Look for UL 217 8th edition on the packaging.

Crawlspace inspection: you have to get in there! So much to see. Water intrusion leaving efflorescence and apparent mold on the block walls. Unsecured electrical wiring. Shimmed wood framing. A sagging support beam. 99.9% (that’s as high as the meter goes) moisture on the uncovered dirt floor (that’s why 6mm poly is required to stop ev***ration of water into the crawlspace. Falling insulation. Now the buyer can make an informed decision.
