Dear Friends,
As Board Chairman of the Porter-Starke Services Foundation, I’d like to extend an invitation to attend our annual Health, Balance, and Hope Symposium, Thursday May 26, in Harre Union on the campus of Valparaiso University. Porter-Starke Services is the preeminent mental health and wellness organization in Northwest Indiana. Annually, Porter-Starke Services serves over 12,000 residents of Northwest Indiana. With offices and services locations in Valparaiso, Portage, Knox and Gary we are able to provide a continuum of health care to all of Northwest Indiana. As the only mental health community center in Porter and Knox counties, we work directly with partners to ensure that our clients and patients receive the best care possible regardless of their ability to pay. Porter-Starke Service’s community reach is significant. However, you will seldom hear about what we do outside of our fundraising events due to client sensitivity and outdated stigmas that still surround mental health.
The Porter-Starke Services Foundation is dedicated to promoting and supporting the mental health and substance abuse treatment needs for our community through comprehensive fundraising efforts. Over the past 30 years, we been have committed to inspiring health, balance and hope in our community. Our fundraising and educational efforts are anchored around two very successful events, the Valparaiso Turkey Trot and the Living Health, Balance & Hope Symposium. These successful events allow the Porter-Starke Services Foundation the opportunity to reach countless members of our community.
Please view the information below and consider joining us along with noted author and speaker, Dr. Michael Yapko from 8:00a to 9:30a, Thursday May 26.

The Power of Focus: Practical Tools for Overcoming Depression
with Michael Yapko, Ph.D.,
Keynote Breakfast 8:00 am – 9:30 am Harre Union/Valparaiso University $35
No one is immune to depression. It is the most common mood disorder in the world and ranked by the World Health Organization as the second greatest cause of human suffering and disability. If depression reaches into our relationships, productivity and physical health, what can we do to prevent and treat it? What factors can lead to depression? How can we recognize it in ourselves and the people we care about?
Based on Dr. Yapko’s new book, Keys to Unlocking Depression, this insightful presentation provides new awareness and practical tools to use and to share with others. Michael D. Yapko, Ph.D. is a clinical psychologist and marriage and family therapist. He is internationally recognized for his work in clinical hypnosis and outcome-focused psychotherapy. For over four decades, Dr. Yapko has pursued a deep interest in brief therapy and treating the disorder of major depression. He has presented his innovative ideas and methods in more than 30 countries.
