Rental scams happen when fake landlords use real-looking listings to steal deposits, fees, or personal information from people desperate to secure housing.

Reports and community discussions in Los Angeles show an increase in fake listings, fake property managers, and rent-gouging concerns after major housing disruptions like the recent wildfire displacement crisis.

The Federal Trade Commission says about 50% of reported rental scams in the past year started on Facebook Marketplace or Facebook housing groups. Craigslist was another major source.

Simple Prevention Tips:
-Always tour the property in person
-Verify ownership through county records or licensed management companies
-Reverse-search listing photos
-Never send money before signing verified paperwork
-Avoid deals that seem unusually cheap for LA
