SCAM ALERT – RENTAL HOUSING FRAUD
The Vandalia Police Department would like to make the public aware of an online rental scam that has recently been reported in the area.
The victim located a house for rent through Facebook Marketplace that appeared legitimate. The listing advertised a two-bedroom home for a low monthly rent and included what appeared to be a legitimate rental application process. The victim paid an application fee and a partial rent payment through a mobile payment app after communicating with the supposed property manager through text messages.
After the payments were sent, communication stopped. The victim later discovered several red flags, including suspicious email addresses, conflicting profile information, and requests to send money to multiple accounts.
Unfortunately, the victim lost several hundred dollars before realizing it was a scam.
Please remember the following tips when searching for rental properties online:
• Be cautious of rental prices that seem significantly lower than normal
• Never send money before verifying the property and ownership
• Be suspicious if asked to use peer-to-peer payment apps for deposits or rent
• Research the property address and confirm who owns it
• Watch for poor communication, inconsistent information, or suspicious email addresses
• If possible, view the property in person before making any payments
Scammers commonly use Facebook Marketplace and other social media platforms to target people searching for affordable housing.
If you believe you may be dealing with a scam, stop communication immediately and contact your local law enforcement agency.
