In October 2025, the Citrus County Sheriff's Office High Tech Crimes Unit led Operation Boogeyman — a multi-agency ICAC sting that produced 16 arrests of men who had been soliciting what they believed were children online. Several of them traveled to the area intending to meet a minor for illegal s*xual activity. Several were already registered s*x offenders violating probation. That was ten months ago — in this same county. Then in June 2026, a Citrus County man was among the 50+ arrested in Operation Bad Habits, a statewide undercover child predator sting across North Central Florida. Two documented operations. Two time windows. The same county went missing from. Florida carries the third-highest human trafficking rate in the nation, according to a state-commissioned University of South Florida report — and half of those trafficked in the state were minors. Citrus County is small. When a 15-year-old disappears here at 12:17 in the morning, the geography that makes this place quiet and remote is the same geography that makes movement fast and detection slow.
