If you want to see corruption between Florida government and developers first-hand, take a look at the speed and unanimity in bill HB4061 that is now headed to be signed into law by . It's a local bill that gives way too much power/control to non-elected Special District officials.
I am so sad and disheartened that there wasn't a single 'nay' vote in either the Florida House or Senate...150 total votes giving authority to our local Special District (controlled by 4 employees of a PRIVATELY-OWNED, CANADA-BASED builder) of the POWER OF EMINENT DOMAIN without having to go through a government entity for approval. How frightening is that?
The bill is not labeled as such, but a FL House analysis says it does that and allows them to annex land to the local municipality without approval. Shouldn't the municipality have to review to ensure resources are available to handle that? And, the power of eminent domain given to FOREIGN company employees? If you don't believe me, look under "Documents" on the left in the link provided. The Bill Analysis...in the summary of the bill.
This was embedded in there and labeled as a bill to more clearly define when seats get elected by residents. Even that primary goal is a misfortune for locals, because it uses calculations based on registered voters...in a state that has so many seasonal and 2nd homes. Then, with the ability to add more land to it, it will take forever for residents to get their say in District operations.
The registered lobbyist for this bill is the Special District's attorney, who is also registered as a lobbyist for Neal Land & Neighborhoods and the Association of Florida Community Developers, amongst others. Neal developer's 3 divisions alone have at least 16 registered lobbyists. Then, they have also set up both business associations and professional associations through which they hire lobbyists, too (Florida Association of Special Districts, for instance).
They are fast-tracking it in the executive branch to be ahead of pending litigation in the judicial branch in order to steal property that the lawsuit claims they fraudulently acquired.
Take a look at it, and you'll see the rabbit hole goes deep!
