Westside Repair Cafe
Small repairs, plus potluck.

Once again the Westside Repair Café team (Our Time Bank & Transition Culver City) have joined forces with the Culver Palms United Methodist Church to help run the next "Regional" Repair Café!

What do you do when you’ve got something you like but it no longer works? Throw it out and buy a new one? Stick it in the attic, the basement or under the stairs? Pay to get it fixed? Fix it yourself? Chances are you toss it out. Or maybe you store it away until that magical day when you can figure out what to do with it.... right.

Strategy: The Westside Repair Café is a volunteer-run, community service dedicated to encouraging the repair and reuse of goods rather than relegating them to landfills.

This fun community event includes volunteers to help fix your broken stuff, a give-away table, a clothing swap, and a zero waste pot luck (please bring food to share).

What to bring: Thins to be fixed, such as

Small household appliances like toasters, hair dryers, mixers, vacuums, etc.
Various electronics including computers, games, tools, audio/video, and other devices
Toys, furniture, lamps, kitchen items, fixtures, minor woodworking
Bicycles, tricycles, skateboards, scooters, skates
Clothing, shoes, luggage
Blade sharpening
Small plumbing items like faucets, valves, hoses, sprinklers
Most items suitable for general handyman types of repairs
If its too big to carry in, bring a picture and/or describe the problem to us and we will make repair suggestions

What to expect: Of course, there is no guarantee you’ll walk out with a workable item. We may not be staffed with the right skills or equipment; it may take some time to research and/or find repair parts, or it may just not be feasible or cost effective to repair your item. But we would give it a shot. If we can’t fix it, we may recommend local repair shops.

WHEN: Guests, please mark your calendars for Saturday, September 21st, start time 11AM, end time 3PM.
[Volunteers and fixers, please plan to arrive at 10AM for setup and orientation, then stay to help cleanup so we can vacate the facility by 4PM.]

WHERE: Culver Palms United Methodist Church is located In Culver City at 4464 Sepulveda Blvd, Zip 90230. Its easily accessible by bike and Culver City Bus #6. If you plan to arrive by car, park in the rear lot. The entrance to the Fellowship Hall is inside the complex next to the patio area.

If you would like to volunteer to help at this event you do not need to be an expert fixer! Apprentices and those with an aptitude to learn are welcome to volunteer. If you can help with repairs, demonstrations, general staff support, etc. please consider signing up on our
Doodle Poll https://doodle.com/poll/icf82ndfxcs47ucf
(volunteers only please)

To help us do the repairs as fast as possible, we ask that you send us an email at [email protected] a week or two in advance describing the items you need repaired and their condition. Please include brand and model numbers where appropriate. Our fixers will research your items ahead of time to help ensure we are able to make proper repairs quickly. Its super helpful to bring any manual you might have for the item you want fixed.

Stations that we hope to be in operation for this event include: Station B - Give-away Table; Station C - Wardrobe, Clothing; Station D - Computers; Station E - Appliances, Electrical; Station F - Jewelry; Station I - Furniture/Wooden Items; Station J - Sharpening; Station CR Crafts & Re-purposing; Station CS Clothing Swap table; maybe 1-2 other Stations and a couple demonstrations (TBD at event).

California's export trade fell again in the latest numbers from the U.S. Census. While the state's overall economy remains on solid footing with imports ticking up, the current global climate is challenging even the most resourceful exporters.
