A Good Man Looking Out for Others

Yesterday I went to visit my friend John at the rehab nursing home.

John was Uncle Dan’s roommate at SMH Sarasota about two months ago. When I couldn’t be at the hospital, John kept an eye out for Uncle Dan and would text me updates. That meant more than he probably realizes.

Uncle Dan passed away Thursday at 5:00 AM.

John is a great example of someone who simply looks out for his fellow man. Even while dealing with his own health challenges, he made sure Uncle Dan wasn’t alone and that our family knew how he was doing.

I also want to give a sincere thank you to the North Port Police Department and North Port Fire Department. They were absolutely amazing, compassionate, and professional. Our community is blessed to have people like them serving and caring for others when it matters most.

So yesterday I stopped by to see John… and for the second time since we met, he enjoyed a little “spa day.” 😄

I attended the North Port Area Chamber’s State of the Union event today at Suncoast Technical College, and it was one of the most uplifting civic gatherings I’ve been to in a long time.

There were well-earned recognitions for the Chamber, strong accomplishments for our business community, and a clear display of the dedication shown by the City of North Port, its staff, and our community partners.

But I will say this - City Manager Jerome Fletcher didn’t deliver an “update.” He delivered something much more powerful. It wasn’t just a speech about where we’ve been. It was a vision about who we’re becoming.

It didn’t feel like he was talking at the room. It felt like he was engaging the future of North Port directly - inviting us into the work ahead instead of reporting on what’s already been done.

That’s leadership. Not performance. Not politics. Leadership on display.

And I want to give a special congratulations to my friend,
Lance Broat of Venice Print Center, who received the North Port Chamber 2026 Business Advocate Award.
A well-deserved recognition for someone who consistently shows up for this community.

Congratulations, Lance and congratulations to the Chamber for hosting a great event that truly captured the momentum of our city.
