Tuesday’s cooking class at the Journey Apartments brought together familiar faces and a few new ones around a table full of fresh ingredients, good conversation, and a great playlist.
 
With volunteer Laura leading the way, Journey residents made tacos from scratch, including a bright and refreshing tomatillo salsa that was a crowd favorite, with Mexican wedding cookies for dessert. Along the way, we discovered that tacos are like many things in life: there are countless ways to do it, everyone has their preferences, and there’s rarely just one right answer.

We are honored to share that Venice Community Housing was recognized as a 2026 California Nonprofit of the Year by Assemblymember Tina McKinnor.
 
Each year, state legislators select one nonprofit from their district to be honored for its impact and service to the community. VCH was proud to be recognized at CalNonprofits’ Nonprofits of the Year Luncheon in Sacramento on May 20, where Co-Executive Director Erika Lee and Senior Director of Development & Communications Ian Nevarez accepted the award on behalf of our organization.
 
This recognition reflects the dedication of our staff, residents, supporters, and community partners who make this work possible every day. We are deeply grateful to Assemblymember McKinnor for this honor and for her continued support of affordable housing and stronger communities across Los Angeles.

Congratulations to our newest Westside Youth Academy graduates, Jamie and Stephanie! We are so proud to celebrate this exciting milestone and all of the hard work, determination, and growth that brought them here. 🎓📚🎉

Westside Youth Academy supports transition-aged youth in earning their high school diploma or equivalent while also providing individualized support, job readiness training, and pathways to continued education and employment. We are honored to be part of these students’ journeys and excited to see where their futures lead.

A special thank you to Ms. Feliz for her dedication, encouragement, and care for every student in the program. Her guidance helps make achievements like these possible.

Big News! A win for Venice Dell. The LA County Superior Court ruled in favor of Venice Community Housing and , finding that the Board of Transportation Commissioners exceeded its authority when it attempted to block the affordable housing project. Thank you, for representing us!

This decision is a major victory for affordable housing, supportive housing, and the future of Venice.

Venice Dell will provide 120 affordable and supportive homes for individuals and families on a City-owned lot identified for affordable housing development nearly a decade ago.

After years of delays, we are one step closer to breaking ground.

We are proud to celebrate VCH Site Monitor Sean Gregory, who was recently honored by the Los Angeles Poverty Department during this year’s “Walk the Talk” parade on Skid Row in recognition of his community leadership and work with LA CAN (Los Angeles Community Action Network) and the Refresh Spot.

Anyone who knows Sean knows the humor and kindness he brings to every interaction. He has a way of making people feel comfortable, seen, and respected, and that spirit carries through
in his work every day. Through his dedication to supporting others and building community with care and authenticity, Sean has made a meaningful impact on Skid Row and brings this experience to his work at VCH.

We’re excited to share some wonderful momentum at VCH’s Lincoln apartments, where we recently had three vacancies filled in just one week. This quick turnaround reflects strong coordination across our team, and we’re especially grateful for the support from our MSW intern Wynter and property manager Marissa in helping new residents move in smoothly.

One of our new residents, Francesca, shared that she has experienced homelessness since the age of 16. Moving into this home marks a profound milestone, her very first apartment of her own. Moments like this remind us why this work matters: creating stability, dignity, and a true place to belong.

Two Saturdays, one incredible community.

This year’s Venice Design Series brought friends and family together in spaces shaped by creativity and care. Guests visited the studios of Charles Gaines and Mixografia, gathered over lunch at Maydan Market, and spent time at Bloom Ranch exploring the land through tours and hands-on activities.

Together, we raised over $150,000 to support VCH’s mission of building affordable housing across Los Angeles. Thank you to everyone who joined us and made this possible. It was a joy to share these experiences with you.

May begins with May Day, also known as International Workers’ Day, a time when people around the world recognize the contributions of workers and the importance of solidarity, dignity, and collective action.
 
In Los Angeles, May Day often brings together labor advocates, immigrant rights organizers, and community groups working across movements to uplift shared goals and support one another. It is a reminder of the importance of community voice and the ongoing work of protecting and uplifting the people who make our city strong.
 
These posters come from our friends at the Center for the Study of Political Graphics, an educational and research archive that collects, preserves, documents, and exhibits posters relating to historical and contemporary movements for social change. Their May Day digital exhibition features 25 U.S. and international posters from 1895 to 2026, highlighting how artists and organizers across generations have used posters to reflect the struggle for workers’ rights, capturing both historical moments and messages that still resonate today. Created in partnership with ._ and mural artist River Garza, this piece reflects the heart of our community-led design approach: creating spaces shaped by the people who live there.
 
The mural is part of a larger public art installation on the property that also includes a sculpture by artist Glen Wilson, bringing complementary works of art to the property that celebrate culture, creativity, and belonging.
 
We’re proud to celebrate this beautiful addition to our building and grateful to everyone helping bring the full vision to life.
