Walter and Debbie Priebe renovated their Pompano Beach home in 2021, adding a second story to the house they bought in 2002 for $650,000.
The upgrade triggered a full reassessment, and by 2023 their annual property tax bill jumped from $15,000 to over $90,000. Florida law treats major improvements as new construction, removing protections like the Save Our Homes cap, which had limited annual increases in assessed value.
The Priebes appealed, but the county upheld the new valuation based on nearby sales, including all-cash offers topping $4 million. Their story underscores a growing issue: rising home values and outdated tax laws are making property taxes unaffordable for even long-term homeowners.
