DESANTIS TO TRANSPLANTS: PAY FLORIDA TAXES FOR FIVE YEARS BEFORE PROPERTY TAX RELIEF — FLORIDA IS FULL

Governor Ron DeSantis announced a key provision in his property tax elimination proposal to protect long-time Floridians.

"If this passes and everyone can just move here and then claim the no tax, well that's not going to make it as good for Floridians," DeSantis said. "And so what this does is it says if you establish residence after this passes, that we can insist on up to FIVE YEARS of you paying tax under the old system like all the Floridians have been doing for all these years, then you can qualify for what we're doing."

He emphasized fairness for residents who have paid taxes for years: "We're going to make sure that the people who have been here, who have been paying these taxes all along, they're the ones that are going to get the primary benefit from this."

DeSantis added: "Florida is full. We can't just have everybody moving here and immediately getting the full benefits without having contributed like the long-time residents have."
