🚨 Has anyone been following the Florida property tax news this week?

Governor DeSantis just announced a proposal that could eliminate property taxes for up to 92% of Florida homeowners. Big deal if you’re planning a move!

There are some important details people are missing though — like the residency requirement, what happens to school funding, and whether it should actually change your buying timeline.

🌟🌟Florida’s House actually voted 80–30 on a proposal to eliminate property taxes for homeowners. Every Republican voted yes, and every Democrat voted no.

Here’s what that proposal would’ve done:
• Remove all non-school property taxes on homesteaded homes
• Phase it in over time by increasing the exemption $100,000 each year for 10 years
• Fully eliminate those taxes by 2037
• School taxes would still stay in place

For context, property taxes in Florida bring in about $55–60 billion a year—funding things like police, fire departments, local governments, and schools.

So obviously, the big question is… where does that money come from instead?

Some leaders even said the idea would be to shift that cost to tourists and new residents moving into the state.

BUT—here’s the catch: the Senate never took it up, and the bill ended up dying in committee when the session ended in March.

Now there’s talk of revisiting it in a special session on April 20, so it’s not completely off the table.

If something like this were to actually pass and get voter approval (it would need 60%), Florida could technically become the first state with no income tax and no property tax on primary homes.

That’s a pretty big deal‼️

Definitely something to keep an eye on 👀
