With fall rapidly approaching, we would like to highlight a popular fall blooming flower! Pictured here, New England aster (Symphyotrichum novae-angliae) can bring a perfect pop of color to your garden. Asters attract a lot of different late season pollinators such as butterflies, bees, and syrphid flies.

But their benefits don't stop in the fall! During winter, they provide food and shelter to many birds and other small animals that eat the seeds and hide in the stalks. Fun fact: the New England Aster is the larval host for the Pearl Crescent, the Gorgone Checkerspot butterfly and the Wavy-Lined Emerald moth.

Foundation for the Preservation of Honey Bees Grad Student Scholarship & Equipment Grant

See below for more information about the 2025 grad student scholarship and equipment grant opportunities from the Foundation for the Preservation of Honey Bees. Note these are two separate opportunities. If you know a graduate student who’s looking for research funding, please pass along the info regarding the scholarship ($5,000). If you or someone you know is looking to acquire new equipment for honey bee-related things (up to $10,000 budget) please consider submitting a proposal.

FPHB grad student scholarship
Award: $5,000 plus travel & lodging to the ABF/ABRC conference in Mobile, AL
Due Date: September 22, 2025
Eligible applicants: Graduate students in the USA or Canada. https://preservationofhoneybees.org/foundation-scholarship/

FPHB equipment grant
Budget: up to $10,000
Due Date: October 21, 2025
Eligible applicants: Academic institutions (e.g., Universities) and non-profit organizations in the USA or Canada.
