You pass through Schulenburg a hundred times on Interstate 10 between Houston and San Antonio and never stop. That is the mistake of a lifetime.
This small Fayette County town of fewer than 3,000 people is the official Home of the Painted Churches of Texas. Czech and German immigrants arrived here in the mid-1800s fleeing poverty and religious persecution in Europe. They came with almost nothing. But they remembered exactly what the great cathedrals of the old world looked like, and they refused to leave that beauty behind.
So they built it themselves.
Four churches sit in the rolling farmland surrounding Schulenburg, each one more breathtaking than the last. Sky blue ceilings. Gold leafed altars. Hand painted angels and vines covering every wall. Stained glass windows that throw colored light across floors built by immigrant hands. The churches in Praha, High Hill, Ammannsville, and Dubina are on the National Register of Historic Places and are considered some of the most beautiful church interiors in the entire United States.
Fifteen of these painted churches survive across Central Texas today. The four surrounding Schulenburg are the crown jewels of all of them.
Halfway between Houston and San Antonio. Most people never stop.
