“Your kid knows how to spend $40 at Target in six minutes. But do they know how credit works?” 😂 1. Teach them to save part of every paycheck. Even a small amount builds the habit.
2. Put their savings in a high-yield savings account. Compare the APY and fees, and choose an insured bank or credit union.
3. Explain how credit cards work. A credit limit is borrowed money, not extra money. 4. When they’re eligible, help them look into a card in their own name. If they qualify, they can use it for planned purchases instead of debit, pay it off in full each month, and look for cash back or other rewards that fit their spending.
5. If they can’t qualify yet, ask about adding them as an authorized user. Check whether your card issuer reports authorized users to the credit bureaus.
6. Show them how to check their credit report so mistakes don’t surprise them when it’s time to buy.
