Major global benchmarks were little changed this week on mixed economic data, with stronger-than-expected US consumer and producer price indices significantly reducing the odds of lower interest rates prior to the summer months, and the most recent “dot plot” now indicating that Fed policymakers anticipate only two rate cuts in 2024. Supercore inflation (excluding food, energy, and housing) has remained uncomfortably high, goods prices rose for the first time in eight months, the Producer Price Index remained firmer than expected, and US retail sales rebounded less in February than prevailing forecasts, with core retail sales (stripping out sales of autos, gas, and building materials) notably flat. 10-year US Treasury yields this week rose slightly to 4.3% (from 4.1% last Friday), the price of West Texas Intermediate crude oil increased by about $3 to $80.54 per barrel, and volatility, as measured by the Chicago Board Options Exchange Volatility Index (VIX), ended this week at 14.41, down from 14.71 one week ago. For the week just ending, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA), Nasdaq Composite (Nasdaq), and Standard & Poors 500 (S&P 500) benchmarks declined -0.02%, -0.70%, and -0.13%, respectively.
