This has been a monster hot summer and our air conditioning systems are running non-stop. Some systems just can’t keep up. You set the thermostat to 72 degrees and the house will only cool to 78 degrees. Did you ever consider that you may not have enough insulation in your attic? Your attic is like a huge oven. Without enough insulation, that heat radiates down into the living space. It continues to radiate this heat into the night until the attic cools. Think of this scenario. When you go outside, the sun rays warm in your skin. When a cloud passes over, you don’t feel the heat from the sun’s rays. Think of your attic insulation as a big cloud. Today’s model energy code for attics is R-38 or about 12” of insulation. What’s in your attic?
