Yesterday, I faced a moment every parent dreads — my daughter Avery suddenly needed the restroom, and urgently. We ran into a nearby shop, but the employee reminded me it was for paying customers only. My heart sank. I didn’t have my wallet. Embarrassed, I was ready to walk away.
Then, without hesitation, two young men stepped forward. “We’ll buy her a cookie,” one said. “That way she’s a paying customer.” That simple gesture gave Avery what she needed most in that moment, and gave me hope in humanity.
When we came out, I learned they were college athletes — Latavious and Jaylen. To them, it was just a cookie. To us, it was everything.
