Having high ceilings means changing a simple 9-volt battery turns into a full OSHA-certified ladder expedition in your living room. And if you have sensitive ears like mine, that sharp piercing beep every 45 seconds is pure psychological warfare. (Honestly, I think half our neighborhood has had a low-battery chirp going off with their windows open all week).

If you have to drag a 12-foot ladder into your living room this weekend, make the climb count with these two quick rules:

⏳ The 10-Year Expiration Date:
Smoke alarms don’t last forever. The internal sensors degrade, and standard units must be fully replaced every 10 years. When you pull it off the ceiling bracket, check the stamped manufacture date on the back. If it says 2016 or earlier, changing the battery isn't enough—replace the entire unit.

🛠️ The California 10-Year Rule:
If you have standalone, battery-operated alarms, California building code requires replacement units to feature a 10-year sealed, tamper-proof lithium battery. If you're climbing up to a 15-foot peak, buy the sealed 10-year unit so you never have to climb this ladder again for a decade.

Hardwired units still need their backup batteries swapped periodically—so do yourself a favor and change them out before they start chirping at 3:00 AM on a Tuesday.
