Thought this might be of interest to homeowners. Our pool is about 25 years old and the plaster was looking worn so we wanted to get it replastered. I did a little research on the internet because we considered doing it ourselves because we do pretty much all our maintenance and remodeling ourselves. One thing I learned is that the plaster is what makes your pool water tight. The gunite (cement) is porous and needs the protection of the plaster. It was only going to cost about $2k more to have a professional do it so we hired Pools Plus for the job. The pictures show the first step. They chiseled the plaster from around the fittings and tile and made several "holes" that the new plaster will adhere to. The thing I didn't know was that there were multiple areas where the plaster was starting to wear that was allowing water to escape and corrode the gunite! You can see in the pics that some areas (especially around the stairs) was really compromised and was creating leaks in our pool. They are going to repair all these areas before they put on the new plaster. I am grateful that we just didn't plaster over a hidden problem. So, I guess I am telling you all this so that you can be aware of how important it is to maintain the plaster in your pool and that when you buy a home with an existing pool I will make sure you get a good pool inspection as part of the buying process.
