🎆Happy 4th of July! Keep Your Home and Household Safe This Holiday Weekend 🎆
As communities nationwide prepare to celebrate Independence Day, Red Rooster Inspections wants to remind all you that a great celebration starts with safety. Fireworks, grilling, and summer heat pose unique risks to our homes and pets.
Please take a few moments to review these essential safety guidelines to ensure your holiday stays joyful and accident-free.
🏡 1. Protecting Your Home and Property
Dry summer conditions can turn a stray spark into a structural fire in seconds.
Clear the Danger Zones: Clean your roof and gutters of dry leaves, pine needles, and other debris. Move flammable materials (like mulch, firewood, and patio cushions) away from the immediate perimeter of your home.
Wet It Down: If you live in an especially dry area, consider lightly watering your lawn and landscaping surrounding your home on the afternoon of the 4th.
Check Your Equipment: Ensure your smoke detectors are working and keep a fire extinguisher or a connected garden hose readily accessible outside.
🍔 2. Safe Grilling Practices
The kitchen might be the heart of the home, but on the 4th, the backyard grill takes center stage.
Location Matters: Position your grill at least 10 feet away from your house, deck railings, overhanging branches, and vinyl siding.
Never Leave It Unattended: A fire can flare up in an instant. Assign a "grill master" to stay with the station until cooking is completely finished.
Proper Shutdown: Let charcoal ashes cool completely for at least 24 hours before disposing of them in a metal container. For gas grills, double-check that the propane valve is tightly closed.
🐾 3. Safeguarding Your Pets
More pets go missing on the Fourth of July than any other day of the year due to noise panic.
Keep Them Inside: Create a safe, secure sanctuary room inside your home with the blinds closed, a TV or radio playing soft background noise, and their favorite toys.
Update IDs: Ensure your pet’s collar tags and microchip contact information are up to date just in case they manage to slip out.
Skip the Table Scraps: Traditional BBQ foods like onions, grapes, and alcoholic beverages are toxic to pets. Stick to their usual treats.
🎇 4. Fireworks Safety & Local Laws
The safest way to enjoy fireworks is to attend a professional public display. However, if you choose to use consumer fireworks where legally permitted:
Know the Law: Check local ordinances. Many municipalities strictly prohibit certain types of fireworks.
Maintain Distance: Never ignite fireworks near houses, dry grass, or brush.
The "Dud" Rule: Never try to re-light a firework that didn't go off. Wait 20 minutes, then submerge it in a bucket of water.
Disposal: Soak all used fireworks in a bucket of water overnight before throwing them in the trash. Leave trash cans with used fireworks outside and off the home rather than in the garage as an added safety measure.
