Good afternoon Waco! After sifting through our monthly crime stats, I took notice that burglaries are beginning to rise again, specifically burglaries of motor vehicles. Just to put this into perspective, last year during the month of March, we had a total of 80 burglaries of motor vehicles reported. March of 2021, we had 122 reported. That's a 53% increase!
Listed below are some of our hardest-hit areas last month so please take a second and see if where you live or work is on this list.
-the Oakwood area (South Waco)
-the Kendrick Park area
-the Cedar Ridge neighborhood
-Baylor/student housing areas
-Alta Vista neighborhood
The vast majority of these crimes can be prevented with some very simple steps. When you park your vehicle, first make sure that you take any and all of your valuables with you, or at least move them out of sight. Second, lock your vehicle up. Most of these burglaries are criminals walking around and just checking door locks. And third, if possible, park your vehicle in well-lit areas. Last, if you do become a victim of these crimes, please please please REPORT IT! Even if you do not believe you had anything stolen, REPORT IT! This gives us a better idea of when, where, and how these criminals are working.
So, what are the takeaways you might ask? TAKE IT IN, LOCK IT UP, AND BE AWARE OF WHERE YOU ARE PARKING! Thanks Waco! Let's do our part to change this number back to a positive this month and year!
