In less than a month, ICE agents have killed two American citizens in Minneapolis. The tableau is dark and the federal pressure is unrelenting. Minneapolis is not a particular hub of migrant activity, but it’s a Democratic-run city that has been a special obsession of the far right. MAGA Republicans have exploited a fraud scandal to demonize the Somali population there, and the fact that Minneapolis was ground zero for the George Floyd uprisings of 2020 has lent it, despite its relatively small size, an outsize place in the right-wing imagination.

Now, Alex Jeffrey Pretti, a 37-year-old V.A. hospital registered nurse, is dead, taken to the ground after he apparently tried to approach federal agents while holding a phone.

“What’s striking about both the fatal shootings of Pretti and Renee Good were how avoidable they were,” political columnist Ross Barkan writes. “Good and Pretti simply did not have to die, and neither posed a threat to the lives of the ICE agents who killed them. But the Trump regime has attempted to erect an alternative reality where both were marauding ‘domestic terrorists’ who brought this carnage on themselves, along with the liberal Democrats of Minnesota.”

“Trump is a malicious liar, as are those around him, and the party line is that ICE can do no wrong, especially in Minnesota,” Barkan writes. MAGA is hoping to convince the nation that the ICE surge of Minneapolis, just like the National Guard invasions of Los Angeles and Chicago and Washington D.C., is noble and true, reflections of some kind of popular will.

But none of it is working.

It does not surprise me that his final words were, “Are you okay?” Caring for people was at the core
of who he was. He was incapable of causing harm. He lived a life of healing, and he lived it well….

We have heavy hearts today and will for many to come. We’ve had this view everyday for almost 13 years. It will never be the same. The experience we had yesterday will haunt us all for life. Alex Pretti will live with us forever. We are so sorry this happened to you. Our love to his family, friends and community is immeasurable.

Things are going to be tough here for a while. Making donuts is hard work that takes people and time and everyone is traumatized right now. Please give us a little time to recuperate but please also support us. We have families to take care of that we love dearly so your support is instrumental in navigating this tragedy. We are a small, but mighty team and we are eternally grateful for the strength and love they lead with.

I’m sure we will have plenty to say going forward but for now we are still in shock. This account is not run by some outside company, it’s just 2 gals trying to lead our small team and serve all you so if it’s sparse on social media, please stop in and give us all a hug and pay your respects to Alex ❤️

We will be opening today 10am-2pm. Hot coffee and hot chocolate for all needing a warm space. We will have minimal donuts but we’ll have some.

We will be closed Monday and Tuesday to figure out life moving forward and then we will return because WE LOVE YOU MINNEAPOLIS. The tragedies we continue to experience together are horrifying but our people are beyond beautiful and we don’t take your s**t. We need your love but the haters are loud so comments are off. America elected a dictator who has no plans of leaving office when his term is up. White supremacy ideology is now killing white people. SMH This authoritarian behavior is what Americans voted for 🇺🇸

This evil administration has bombed Nigeria, is threatening Greenland, who bothers no one, has fckd all of our international relationships, fired tons of federal workers, rewritten our educational curriculum to erase all truths... this is fascism. This is what America voted for.

30 to 32 deaths in 2025 and six more deaths within the first two weeks of this year from ICE activations. This is clear and plain and anyone that thinks this is not gonna get worst is delusional.
