My statement on today's press conference announcing DC meeting its goal of building 36,000 homes by 2025:
“Today, the Mayor announced that the District has met its goal from 2019 of producing 36,000 new units of housing by 2025. This is an important milestone, met with our consistent investments in housing. But we still have work to do. The administration didn’t meet its goal of distributing new housing evenly across wards or its goal of 1/3 of those units being affordable. Without creating more affordable housing for people at all income levels who work in the District, we will see even more displacement and businesses looking to other jurisdictions. And without spreading affordable housing across DC, parts of our city, particularly Wards 7 and 8, will struggle to get the economic revival residents are asking for. I’m continuing to push the administration through innovative ideas and close oversight, including requiring the agencies under the Committee on Housing to establish measurable goals and regularly report on progress to achieve them.”
