The caterpillars have been very hungry and very busy munching away!! Even though there is plenty of milkweed, we often found them munching together on the same stalk. Community!! Once their bellies get as full as they can get, they climb to high territory, attach their bottoms and hang like upside down question marks. Quiet. Still. Until they suddenly start rocking back and forth and then they spin around and turn themselves into liquid that forms a chrysalis and they chop off their own heads. (!!!) The chrysalis is gorgeous. Stunning! A beautiful green with gold specs. I’m in awe every time!

I love this new art install I found in DC yesterday and also here’s a quick caterpillar update. They are getting bigger! And we found another little baby on a milkweed plant in our front yard and brought it safely into the habitat. Lots of munching happening here on 16th St!

What a gorgeous, fun weekend. We got some babies munchin away, safe in our caterpillar/butterfly habitat. More visits from monarchs with gifts offered everywhere. And I got to open my fabulous listing at 910 Independence. Always proud to share this lovely, unique lady with buyers and neighbors. So grateful for all of it!

DC in August is a waiting game. Here, on 16th St, we wait on Monarchs and thunderstorms. This milkweed was harvested for and gifted to me by my friend and fabulous teacher Margi. We have let it take over and some years the monarchs are few, then one summer we were dripping in caterpillars out there, this year has been quiet. Until today. She came when we were distracted and left gifts all over. She was so excited I even found an egg on top of a leaf instead of underneath. Our butterfly house where the caterpillars grow up safely is full, nestled in the fig tree, on the old, wooden table on our deck. Itty bitty caterpillars will hatch soon and start chompin it all up! What a world!
