An area rug should be more than just decorative—it should also help create a focal point in your living room! Placing a rug in the right spot can make all the difference in your space's overall look and feel.

To choose the right size rug for a living room where you want it to be 2 feet away from the couch, ensure the rug extends at least 2 feet beyond the sofa on each side, meaning it should be at least 4 feet wider than the couch, with the front legs of the furniture ideally resting on the rug; this creates a well-defined seating area and anchors the furniture in the space.

• Minimum width: Aim for a rug that is at least 2 feet wider than your couch on each side.

• Front legs on the rug: Ideally, the front legs of your sofa should sit on the rug.

• Consider the room size: While maintaining the 2-foot distance from the couch, also ensure the rug doesn't overwhelm the room by leaving enough space around the edges.
