We use various mechanisms for getting there: thoughtful planning, stairs as screening elements, varying ceiling heights, ceiling accents, lighting design, accent walls, and of course, the placement of furniture and accents.

I’m happy to report that at just about 1 month since starting our 9-unit add/alt project in Pennsylvania Ave SE, Historic Preservation is on board! We have massing, unit layouts, and the beginning of a simple, clean aesthetic for our rear and top additions well established already. Steps from the US Capitol, this complex project will generate a variety of unit sizes. The rear addition will as purposely conceived to resemble a carriage house in scale and character.
