Washington, D.C. Office of Tax and Revenue Homestead Unit Suspending Processing Of Homestead Applications
The division of the DC Office of Tax and Revenue that processes homestead, senior, and disabled applications (FP-100) has announced that, as of July 17, 2019, it will suspend the processing of applications, grant benefits, and tax account adjustments. This action was “taken to meet a demanding billing timeline to reconcile tax accounts” associated with the upcoming 2019 second half tax year billing.

It is anticipated that the office will resume normal processing on August 16, 2019, but that it may take up to 45 days for accounts to be “updated and a corrected tax bill mailed.” One can predict that “corrective bills” may result In duplicate payment by lenders (resulting in negative escrows) or a requirement that homeowners or lenders may need to endure the refund process if a higher amount (sans homestead deduction) was paid.

Inquiries about this adjustment should be directed to [email protected].

If your lender is escrowing, make sure they process the payment. Alexandria property taxes are due June 15th and Fairfax property taxes are due July 28th.

Beware of fraudulent checks. These include checks that appear to come from a legitimate company like Avenue but are not actually issued by Avenue. If you are not expecting a check from any particular company and/or are not owed a check from any particular company, then the check is most likely not legitimate. Every check Avenue actually issues is 100% valid. It is easy for criminals to obtain company account information due to the number of checks in circulation. In order to protect my customer’s funds we have PosiPay which reports all valid checks written. If we didn’t write it, even if someone uses our account and company name, it will not clear.

It is with heavy heart and much sorrow that I write this to let you know that, on November 2, 2017, Mark Lobar passed away after a battle with cancer. As most know, he was an instrumental part of Avenue Commercial Title Company, Inc. for the past 20 years working on some of the most difficult cases with unbridled gusto and an always present desire to have an issue free closing. Every deal Mark worked on was made easier for others involved as Mark would always be looking out for the best interest of all parties so as to make sure things were done right and in the most economical way. His passion for real estate and, in particular, the title industry was evident anytime you had a long (oftentimes, very long) conversation with him where he would educate everyone on the intricacies of our industry. The love and respect for Mark is evident anytime you run into someone who has worked with him, as most have a good story of the miracles Mark was able to work with regard to one deal or another.

Having worked with Mark for the past 20 plus years, he has passed on much of his wisdom to me and to Larry Roscher, as well as others in our company. As most of you already know, we will continue to work extremely hard for all of our clients so as to achieve the level of service Mark has made you all accustomed to. Larry and I stand ready to meet all of your title insurance needs and to ensure your continued success in the industry.

Mark is survived by his husband John Weiss of Florida; his daughter Carrie L. Baxter; brother Lance Lobar; and his brother Bruce Lobar as well as extended family and friends.

Details regarding the service have not been made available as of yet, but information should be available soon
