Big thanks to Bowie State University for hosting WC Smith's Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) participants for a tour of the campus.

College campus tours are a regular feature of the SYEP program, which hires students ages 14-17 for 6-week paid jobs within WC Smith.

WC Smith was proud to welcome Keith Foxx, founder of Engineering, and Ken Sandy, founder of Garment Care, as guest speakers for the kick-off of our 2026 Summer Youth Employment Program last week.

Now in its 34th year, SYEP provides DC youth ages 14–17 with six weeks of paid work experience at WC Smith communities across the District and through the iCAN Technical Theater program at Building Bridges Across the River.

A big thank you to Keith and Ken for sharing their career journeys, inspiring our participants, and encouraging the next generation of leaders.

WC Smith is pleased to announce that Ashawna Johnson has been promoted to Assistant Vice President of Property Management.

Ashawna started as a porter more than 20 years ago, and steadily rose through the company to manage a portfolio comprising 8 properties and nearly 800 units. She's adept at navigating the complex rules and requirements for tax-credit housing. And once she knows it, she never forgets your birthday! Congratulations, Ashawna! 🎉

A proud moment for the WC Smith team yesterday at Skyland Town Center as we celebrated the ribbon cutting of the new community park honoring Karen Williams.

Karen Williams was a dedicated Hillcrest leader and advocate whose passion for Ward 7 helped move this vision forward for years. This park stands as a tribute to her legacy and commitment to community.

We’re grateful to DC Mayor Bowser and Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development. We are excited to see Skyland continue to grow as a vibrant place to live, gather, and connect. 🌿

Skyland is a project of WC Smith, Rappaport, Washington East Foundation, Marshall Heights Community Development Organization, and Skyland DC.

A long-awaited project in Southeast D.C. hit a major milestone with the ribbon-cutting on a new community park in the Skyland neighborhood. News4’s Mark Segraves reports it’s the final phase of a massive redevelopment effort years in the making.
