A verifier typically reviews utility data, building characteristics, meter configuration, gross floor area, and ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager records for accuracy and completeness. Discrepancies in any of these areas can add time and cost to the process.

Reaching out to a verifier late in the cycle creates scheduling pressure and limited availability. Starting early gives your team room to identify and address issues without the added urgency of a tight deadline.

Maryland has extended its 2026 energy benchmarking submission deadline.

For the current reporting cycle, submissions received by June 30, 2026 will be considered timely. The standard annual deadline is June 1.

This is a useful adjustment, but it does not reduce the work involved. Getting ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager records in order typically requires coordinating with utility providers, resolving meter configurations, and cleaning up data gaps. That preparation takes meaningful time regardless of the filing date.

If your covered Maryland property has not started the benchmarking process, now you have received a little more time to review your setup and close any gaps before the end of June.
