The Ngoni Royal Establishment has condemned the manner in which the Bemba mourners conducted the tribal cousinship with the Easterners at Ephendukeni Palace during the arrival of the mortal remains of the late Paramount Chief Mpezeni IV.

Speaking to the media, Ngoni Royal Establishment representative Chief Madzimawe was unhappy with the Bembas for blocking the Ngoni leadership from entering the mourning house, including Paramount Chief Mberwa of Malawi, who is second in rank to the late Paramount Chief Mpezeni IV and was traditionally supposed to receive his remains.

The Ngoni Royal Establishment, has since urged the Bembas to consult on how traditional cousinship should be conducted with respect and in an orderly manner, without shaming themselves.

Time for a pooled investment vehicle for and by Zambians🇿🇲

Christopher Kang’ombe writes:

The Government of the Republic of Zambia has announced plans to borrow $0.6 billion from the Africa Development Bank(AfDB) towards expenses for buying back the $1.36 billion Eurobond at $1.06 billion to avoid triggering of the step up coupon rates.

The difference between the estimated $1. 06 billion needed to be pay the bondholders now and the $0.6 billion from AfDB will be found from local financing.

Let me simplify this for you ;

GRZ is paying approximately $ 7 million per year to bondholders as interest payments and will continue doing so until the year 2035.

After that year, the estimated $ 7 million will jump ( due to step up coupon rates) to $ 100 million as interest payments to the people govt borrowed money from under the debt restructuring terms of 2024.

What the buying back strategy intends to achieve is avoiding paying the new $100 million to the bond holders between 2035 and 2053.

Here is however, the reason for my writing today.

The price of copper is now $13,000 per tonne and demand is not going down. Let’s imagine if Zambia had a higher shareholding value in all the mines currently operating in our country?

Imagine if one or two more mine sites under the ongoing geophysical mapping exercise could actually be developed with a higher government share holding when they become operational?

My proposal ; A decision must be made today for the Zambian government to invest between $10 to $12million in exploration expenses at the identified mine sites(which investment can be converted to equity).

Zambia must own the exploration data and allow citizens to invest in mining development expenses through a POOLED INVESTMENT VEHICLE to raise over $500 million needed to run a mine and for any other investment opportunity.

This will ensure that in future we do not have to borrow too much money externally to finance projects.

MUSICIAN EDWARD CHANDA PLEADS NOT GUILTY TO CHILD-RELATED OFFENCES

By Musonda Mukuka
One-half of the musical duo Chanda Na Kay appeared before the Lusaka Magistrate’s Court on allegations related to the exploitation of minors.

Edward Chanda pleaded not guilty to three counts, including the prohibition of trafficking in children, the prohibition of child grooming, and the prohibition of child solicitation.

According to the indictment, the offences are alleged to have taken place between 2022 and 2024.

Chanda is accused of using electronic communication and social media platforms in interactions involving minors, allegations he denied when the matter came up for plea before the court.
Court proceedings were brief, with no witnesses called during the plea appearance. Edward Chanda is currently out on bail.

The case has drawn attention online due to Chanda’s prominence within Zambia’s music industry. As part of Chanda Na Kay, the artist has built a strong following among young audiences across the country and the region.

Chanda Na Kay, an alternative hip hop group from the Copperbelt known for hits such as Go Low and Dance With You, has dominated local airwaves and awards shows.

The group has broken streaming and chart records and received recognition at the Kwacha Music Awards, the Ngoma Awards, and the African Entertainment Annual Awards.

Fans reacted with shock to the allegations, with many taking to Facebook and X to express disbelief following news of the court appearance. Some users stated that they initially believed the reports were part of a promotional campaign for upcoming music, while others urged the public not to allow the artist’s fame and popularity to overshadow the seriousness of the alleged offences.
The case has since sparked wider conversation online surrounding celebrity culture, accountability, and the influence musicians hold over younger audiences. By press time, neither Chanda nor his management team had released an official statement regarding the matter.

In Zambia, cases involving allegations relating to the exploitation of minors are treated as sensitive matters within the justice system and are handled through established criminal procedure before the courts.

Such matters are guided by laws aimed at the protection of children, with proceedings generally placing emphasis on safeguarding vulnerable witnesses and ensuring strict evidentiary standards.

In this case, the allegations against Edward Chanda will proceed through the normal trial process, with the prosecution required to prove the charges beyond a reasonable doubt, while the defence is expected to challenge the evidence presented before the court.
The matter is expected to return to court on June 1, 2026, when trial proceedings are set to commence. Until then, the accused remains on bail as the case progresses through the judicial process.
Authorities have reiterated that all persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of law.
