Today's number: $117 billion

That was the economic impact of agriculture in North Carolina in 2024, according to a report from NC State using the latest available data. That figure represents nearly 14% of the state’s $844 billion economy.

Agriculture employs about one of every five jobs statewide or about 1 million total jobs. The closest industries in employment are professional and business services, education and health care services, and government, each representing about 15% of state jobs.

The report defines agriculture as the food, fiber and forestry sector. The economic impact includes all stages from growing and raising farm products until we eat, wear or use them. The definition comes from NC State University’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and ncludes restaurants and grocery stores.

Here’s the breakdown:

Food and related products — $63.8 billion

Forestry and related products — $23.3 billion

To***co and related products — $12.7 billion

Pharmaceutical preparation manufacturing — $9.3 billion

Production of plants and landscaping — $4.6 billion

Fiber, textiles and related industries — $2.9 billion
