This morning’s Community Action Planning Council Fair Housing Forum put the North Country’s housing pressures in plain view.
County planning staff and a New York State assistant attorney general walked members of the room through local homelessness work, transportation gaps that keep people from stable housing, and the fair housing statutes that govern how we list, show, and rent property.
Jillian Redder and Alicia Dewey outlined current housing and homeless initiatives and the transportation projects meant to connect residents with jobs and services. Deanna Nelson of the Attorney General’s office then covered the basics of fair housing law in New York, including source-of-income protections and the practical obligations that fall on brokers, agents, and property managers.

Fair housing is not an annual workshop. It is part of every showing, every application, and every lease we touch. If a client, tenant, or colleague raises a concern, send them to CAPC and stay current on the rules that protect this market.
