I could pick many reasons why I love being a land surveyor, but this Is probably one of the coolest. I learned this about surveying shortly after getting my first job In the industry when I was 23 yrs old. My name goes down In the history books with every plat I draw and record at the courthouse.

A 19 year old future father of our country, our first president and a fixture on Mt. Rushmore was also a Land Surveyor. This is a plat of his from a survey he completed in Frederick County, Virginia, now part of West Virginia. George Washington came to western Virginia to survey the lands of Lord Fairfax.

And again this is why you should always get a survey down when you buy property. Owners purchased a newly constructed home from the builder/developer, thinks everything is great. Now, a year or so later, he wants to enclose his patio… applying for building permit requires a survey showing the house, driveway, patio, and building setback lines. As you can see, with the red lines (building setback lines), that the house (the green line) is well over the setbacks. So now this means he will, more than likely, not be able to enclose his patio because of that. Now he is stuck with this property and if/when he gets ready to sell, he is legally obligated to tell the next purchaser that his house sits over the setbacks and could cost him a sale.

It is really cool things like this that make my job so much fun. It truly is amazing…

This picture explains that when the Statue of Liberty was placed in New York harbor in 1887, that they established a latitude and longitude for the very bottom tip of the torch so that ships could navigate the harbor in the fog, you could always see the light. So, what this really means is that anybody could put that latitude and longitude into their GPS (phone, car, watch, whatever) from anywhere in the world, and get within 20-30 yards. That sounds pretty cool… I’ll do you one better. The equipment I use every day, can get within a 1/4” of that tip… which puts me on top of the lightbulb itself. I can do that from anywhere in the world with my equipment. Wow that just sounds cool to me.
