PADS is the first point of contact for the homeless in Lake County and often the only hope for someone facing a long night in the harsh cold or blistering heat. We serve individuals, families with children, the mentally ill, and veterans regardless of their reason for being homeless by providing vital services, such as emergency shelter, permanent supportive housing, street outreach, and social services. We understand and care about improving local hardships for individuals and the Lake County community. PADS partners with Lake County businesses, houses of worship and social service agencies to fulfill our mission to help the homeless get into stable housing.

When Xiomara found David sleeping outside the courthouse, she asked why he chose such a public place.

“I sleep in front of the camera for my safety.”

That moment stayed with Xiomara.

David came to PADS through medical respite, where he had a safe place to recover and reconnect with healthcare. He was facing diabetes, severe leg edema, and eventually learned he had severe sleep apnea.

With support from his care team, David began taking steps toward better health and stability. Xiomara also advocated for housing that could meet his ongoing needs.

Today, David has a high-rise apartment overlooking Lake Michigan.

His journey is a reminder of what can happen when someone has a safe place to begin, people willing to stand beside them, and the opportunity to move forward.
