You might not need a fence permit, but you should still call us to check.

We’ve had a handful of people build fences without reading the rules. For example, we don’t allow fences in the front yard with out a permit and approval from the Board of Zoning Appeals.

We had a resident who built a fence that was higher than allowed. Their case was heard at the Board of Appeals. They had to tear out the fence and rebuild. We can’t imagine the cost and hassle of this.

It’s a situation that could have been easily avoided.

Listen, we don’t like red tape either. But this isn’t red tape. There are rules about fences for several reasons:
• Safety: we care about sight lines for pedestrians and drivers
• Aesthetics: we strive to maintain the character of Wauwatosa neighborhoods. Mismatched or disruptive fence styles could impact that.
• Property rights: we respect property owners’ rights, including property boundaries and how fences affect surrounding properties
